HAFIL (AL Amean – School Transportation Project)

Background

HAFIL Transportation Establishment, part of the Al-Naghi Group, is the largest transportation company in Saudi Arabia. HAFIL has about 6500 buses, plus mobile workshops, winches, and ambulance cars, for a total of about 8000 vehicles.

1. The Ministry of Education, in an effort to decrease the time parents spend driving their daughters to school, asked HAFIL to provide transportation for schoolgirls in the provinces of Riyadh, Makkah, Qassim and the Eastern Province. The huge number of both students and pickup points made manual assignment impossible. Also, parents were afraid to let their daughters ride the bus without assurance that it would be safe and carefully monitored.

2. During the hajj season, when school is out, HAFIL uses the entire fleet to serve pilgrims, providing more than 35% of the buses. Because of the vast number of people involved and the requirement that all buses must reach a central location in a very short time, the operation is a significant logistical challenge, requiring meticulous planning and execution.

Solution

Motabei devised a comprehensive fleet management and AVL system to address the several issues involved in both operations. For the school transportation component, this included:

·         Gathering all information about pickup points and students to facilitate automatic assignment based on zipcode , bus capacity and school start time.

·         Monitoring all bus events, including route deviations, speeding, missing stops, etc.

·         Giving parents online access to bus location and estimated arrival time, and SMS alert on arrival.

·         A complete maintenance module to keep buses moving.

·         Driver evaluation.

·         Integration with Ministry of Education systems.

The service will be expanded to other regions, and to teachers, during the next three years.

Our tracking software allows the HAFIL fleet operation team and supervisory staff to closely monitor the progress of vehicles that operate on a wide variety of tasks. The system provides HAFIL with the information necessary to support the daily operations and management of the business now and in the future.
